about

Tree Tops almost didn’t happen. It came along at the end of a period of great upheaval in my life; a time I was not sure I would survive. I had spent the previous two, maybe three years buried in the study of jazz guitar. I was listening to the masters and wondering if it would ever make sense. What did make sense to me and what always has is that good music is the story of life; a story we share and why we speak.

The EP was made on a bare-bones budget but with a surfeit of love and encouragement.

For the most part this is a duo album with myself on guitar and my friend Peter Lane on drums. Ben Williams provided incredible help in his arrangement and production of “Scrapyards”. Andy Westcott and Matt Samson contributed their engineering skills and Philip Guest held a towel over the toaster to stop it rattling during the bass notes.

Tree Tops was released nearly thirty years ago, only on tape cassette and in a very limited quantity. This is the first time the entire album has been made available since. There are a few moments when the sound quality suffers a little due to the limitations we were working with but we felt it was important to keep going in the hope that the music would shine through.
